https://www.stereogum.com/2211278/zwan-mary-star-of-the-sea-turns-20/reviews/the-anniversary/

nice article that collects a few bits and pieces

on the one hand it makes me feel old
on the other, to think siamese dream and zwan were only 10 years apart ... as long ago as Oceania is now
:?

zwan might be the last decent album he ever made (or will make)

some classic corgan zingers in there too

Zwan owns lol

I mostly remember that when the LP flopped the fanbase got all defensive about how they should be judged by the Djali Zwan stuff instead.

I did see one of their very first shows and it ripped, like actual triple-guitar jams and shit, which is very much not what the eventual album sounded like.

Im sure i mentioned this at least twice in this thread before but Zwan is the one concert i went to when I thought i might be trampled by the crowd. Small venue in Columbus, people rushed the stage when they got on, I was with gf and two of her friends, she and one of them got pulled out of the crowd by staff during the first song and never returned. I was kinda stuck where i was, squashed between morons, lifted my head up trying to grab all the air i could for the whole like 90 mins of the show, paid zero attention to it.

Mind you i didn't like the record anyway.

pajo and sweeney in a band with billy corgan is really weird in hindsight. i saw them at a big festival thing in high school. i don't remember them being that good. pajo looked particularly bored. always like to see paz lenchantin though. kind of a shame she ended up with the elderly pixies tho.

lyric is really really really good. it's what all the heads wanted let me give the world to you to be

zwan project would be worth it if they'd never recorded another song but instead they recorded many other songs, some of which are very good too

what's the range of Zwan rarities that are out there like?

I guess Billy's too bitter to ever issue a 20th anniv deluxe

Corgan making the other members sign NDAs tells you pretty much everything you'll ever need to know.

I love that how people in the comments are hoping for a reissue that isn't brickwalled to hell as if they haven't heard what he did to the SP albums for their deluxe editions.

he's kept Zeitgeist off (and refused to reissue it on vinyl) out of spite. he felt like he gave the fans what they wanted (a loud, guitar-driven new Pumpkins record) and the fans said 'nah' so he's bitter about it.

could be the same w/ZWAN

zwan meant a lot to me back in the day. i always liked thec pumpkins' radio hits but it wasn't until like 2000 when i got really into them and i realized they were breaking up which was not ideal for my budding fandom, which included downloading lots of their live show recordings (shout out to the hub if anyone was on there).. so when i found out about zwan i kinda went all-in. i still really remember loving a ton of their early shows. the album came out and i didn't understand why they made it sound so "clean" or something but i still listened to it a lot. got to see them live in philly with my dad and it was really good.

you dont need to. i think ive told this story on the board, but it might be one i just tell IRL. if i have told it, i told it wrong, because i recently reupped on it from my cuz.

there was a pretty infamous bar in NYC called siberia. a lot of random celebs and journos frequented it. totally shitty place in midtown. owner ran a string of shitty places, but is a pretty funny guy. and knows ppl. anyway.

somehow my cousin managed siberia for a while. one night sweeney was in there getting trashed and wanted my cousin and my cousin's friend to keep drinking with him elsewhere. they were both dead broke (like not a dollar) and pretty embarrassed about it. matt kept pushing them to go and finally my cousin was like dude, i cant, i drink here for free, i dont have a fucking dime. and sweeney goes "FUCK IT! FUCK IT! I GOT ZWAN MONEY! LET'S GO!"

I was going to go through and make a good like compilation of the best sounding versions of their live material but it's too much of a chore. but honestly I'd rather listen to a mediocre sounding bootleg take than the album version of these songs. MSOTS sounds so fucking awful.

I had tickets to the first two Zwan shows but my parents finally told me to not do that and I was already in trouble for leaving college and going to another state to hang out with someone I knew from Online and not telling anyone lol. oh well. I did see them like 7 times idk.

and I was at the columbia show which was the first time they played lyric

I was impressed with that one and "world goes round" which became ride a black swan

sometimes I like to look for myself in these videos but I know I was standing in the back near the tapers so i hopefully am not in this boot lol

I saw zwan right when they started playing shows and for whatever reason (as a not very big pumpkins fan) it was amazing. extremely loud, big RAWK sound, I loved it and then moved on and never actually heard the record. if there's a particularly good early zwan show, I'd love to hear it

lol yeah Only Late 90s Kids Will Understand This

sometimes i wonder what would have happened if i'd just driven to chicago with my friend to go to the last 2 pumpkins shows

iirc the answer is probably 'fuck a netphorian' so maybe i dodged a bullet
