Statements like ‘sacred obligation’ aren’t really meant to persuade us. Most Americans obviously don’t know or care particularly about the situation in Ukraine. It’s meant to signal to Russia that the administration is setting a hard line.

I’m still guessing that a diplomatic solution will be found.

The UC Berkeley expert I spoke with described your approach to boarding -- posting things without knowing whether they’re true in order to juice engagement -- as “sociopathic.” Do you have a response to that?

Wait are you saying Russia is amassing troops on the border of Ukraine to launch a surprise attack against China? Because I’m pretty sure the Chinese would fight back.

Pretty close, I think there’s only one country between them.

Hard to know how seriously Putin feels threatened by NATO stuff (seems unlikely as he can nuke the planet multiple times over) but he is obsessed with Ukraine and Russia's sovereignty, wrote an article on it last year.

http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/66181

He frames it as a Germany + Austria style situation but that's obviously disingenuous to a degree. I certainly think he's overestimated Russian sympathies in Ukraine (that the LRB article I posted earlier covers well and also why that has shifted in the last five years).

Guess the question now is how does he stand down without harming his strong man reputation. Not sure how useful Biden's approach will be for that.

I for one am looking forward to Putin's BBC History of Russia series (English narration by Sean Bean)
