however, the dungeon design is top notch. i can't think of too many jrpgs that do better. music is probably good from what little i remember?
downsides are it's bog-standard tropey, piss easy, and every game after the originals suck absolute dogshit
lol wait there's only one game after the originals
golden sun was the first jrpg i played as a kid and in some ways it spoiled me for a lot of the others. in addition to the standard tropes and mechanics it had all these really amazing zelda-esque puzzles that required you to use your magic abilities outside of combat. it also had these pokemon-like critters throughout the world that you could catch and use in battle for standard attacks and summons. It felt so jam packed with features and then most subsequent jrpgs i tried only had like one or two aspects that i loved about golden sun.
i doubt the story really holds up but it definitely got me invested at the time and when the sequel starts and you're playing as the bad guys from the first gameToggle Spoiler that kinda blew my lil mind
It sucks that videogames talks so much in games sucking or being amazing because I'm playing Circle of the Moon and really really enjoying it. It's not perfect or groundbreaking really but it's perfectly solid

Speaking of staying out of extremes, I played through Golden Sun 1 on the GBA back when it was current and i thought it was okay, it was cool because it seemed like a real RPG on a GBA, but I don't know if I would list it on a top games list

This is why I wanna either get game pass or a really good pirating workflow going. At least for me the binary judgment of game good / game bad has to do with games costing money that I don’t have
I try to avoid poetry at all costs, on every occasion. So why am I intrigued and bewitched by this?

nah i'm delaying the final boss because i had so much fun playing it even if it was shorter than i wish it was. we're lucky to have huuuuuge metroidvania's like hollow knight imo.
i love playing stuff out of historical curiosity and i def wouldnt do that without piracy and cheap ports like i would never have paid for ys 1 + 2 chronicles or whatever. and is it a "good" game? probably not! but i'm really glad i played it and had a great time and loved having more context for later games that i think are "better"

100% agree which is why i rep the 3ds so hard. it's the perfect form for emulation imo, ps vita might be better though (i don't have a ps vita so i wouldn't know)
i love my ps vita bc the psp catalog in particular is surprisingly rich, and the psx catalog obviously owns. but more times than not when i get a little bit deep into a psx game on vita i tend to just feel like i should be playing it on a tv, which i dont really feel about most snes games i play? maybe this is just true of vagrant story and symphony of the night lol. and i haven't tried the snes emulator on vita but i've heard it's a little wonky.
but yeah the game boy/gba/ds/3ds/nes/snes (!) catalog is just so fucking stacked, and roms are so easy to get, and the console is so easy to hack. it's a lot of fun. in the last week or two i've bopped around between soul blazer and earthbound and genealogy of the holy war and the "corrected woolsey translation" version of ff6 and the gba ff1/2 port...it's so decadent lmao

I've been wanting to replay Breath of the Wild, but I thought I'd wait till the OLED came out (I actually haven't played much of BOTW on the Switch, I played through it on the Wii U) and man is it sooooo gorgeous on this thing
The only thing is I have to get another grip the joycons are too small for my monkey hands and playing so much handheld is hurting my thumb hah

hmmmmm that sounds good actually
i've done this for about 2 hours now and I just don't know. it's incredible... like completely insane that they did it - recreated the entire game as a SNES DQ game, but you just lose sooooo much in the conversion. The town are so detailed, the characters are so well done, and world is really crafted. I dunno. I might keep going... the one advantage is it's so much shorter because everything is smaller scale.
i remember having to ask around my school for how to get past certain parts, like there was a friend of a friend who knew a guy who beat it and i had to go down the chain to find out you needed to power bomb that glass tunnel. i spent hours going in circles as a kid but i never stopped playing!
