i know, i know. there's a "wii u for dorks" thread for discussing wii u shit and a "new videogames" thread that occasionally makes mention of wii u/3DS, and then there's a "retro gaming thread" where petty posts a lot, and an "old videogames" thread that deals with some NES/SNES era shit alongside old PC games, but i mean come on. where can a fan of all things Nintendo both old and new post up to reminisce about the games of old or get the latest info on new developments in marioland?
here. this is where.

i was deciding between buying a Wii U and a 3DS a couple of weeks ago, and went with the handheld. grabbed the Mario & Luigi: Dream Team version and am about halfway through that game now. fucking love it. the kid falls asleep, the wife falls asleep, and i'm sitting there in the dark cross-eyed with 3-dimensional delight. just cruising around stompin' on baddies and reading hilarious text bubbles. good times.
also grabbed Super Mario 3D Land, Bravely Default, Zelda: Link Between Worlds, and Shovel Knight. man it's going to be a fun couple of months around these parts!

Weird question, but did anyone remember a distinct smell when opening SNES/Nintendo 64 boxes up for the first time? It wasn't a bad smell or particularly noticeable, but I feel like it was a part of my childhood. It was probably just cardboard or something.
i've owned a NES, Gameboy, SNES, N64, GBA, Gamecube, DS, Wii and 3DS over the course of the past 28 years. i had forgotten how happy playing a new Nintendo game made me until powering up the 3DS. it's who i am.

i was feeling the exact same way before i bought the 3DS. i grabbed Super Mario 3D Land as well, which i forgot above. haven't played it yet but i'm pretty psyched for this and, eventually, 3D World on Wii U.

i just remember that magazine as being unrelentingly pro-nintendo. it would talk in high terms about how great a shitty game was. don't get me wrong, i love nintendo, just the magazine made me erk a bit.
i remember one day in 1986 or so when my dad got home from his weekly trip to some other state for work, and he comes walking down the stairs to the basement where my brother and i are eating polly-o string cheese and playing SMB. and he's got this smile on his face as he produces a copy of Baseball for NES, and then sits down and proceeds to play the game with us for hours. best memory. he played most sports games with us through the SNES years and that was it. but he was excellent at Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf and Super Play Action Football.

This post really speaks to me since I sit there in the dark and play my 3DS till mad late while my girlfriend is asleep next to me. Sometimes she wakes up and goes what are you doing and I say "Going to sleep soon"
Tone sincere also I would never troll or purposefully be antagonistic or anything on something serious.

I will say that my Wii U has been collecting dust in my living room mainly because I have no one to play games with but also because usually I'd just rather play 3DS

Well, Nintendo published the magazine, so of course it was editorially bankrupt from a reviews perspective
They also held content hostage, and were somewhat hostile toward third-party enthusiast press outlets
I would suggest that anyone who owned console hardware between 1985 and 1996 read that new Blake Harris book, Console Wars
I can probably upload the audiobook MP3 tonight if anyone wants it
one of the great tragedies of my life is that my parents and grandparents failed to maintain my mountain of drawings from 1983 - 1998. in addition to many designs for imagined pairs of Nike Air Jordans (and Agassi's), there were probably 100s of aborted "game designs."
miraculously, a friend of mine from elementary school through grad school recently told me he found a poster board with our design for Little Nemo 2 for NES. i've asked him to send it to me for scanning.
I vividly recall forcing my mom to take me to Toys R Us so I could gawk at the Sega Saturn, which I was convinced was the system to own in the summer of 1996. Of course, Nintendo had other plans.
I was greeted by a row of demo kiosks, prominently displayed at the front of the store (separate from TRU's wall of Xeroxed NES boxes and corresponding paper slips), all of them featuring a Nintendo 64 replete with Super Mario 64. My brain nearly melted.
My mind was quickly changed and we ended up pre-ordering the 64 that very night. I got a very cool SM64 t-shirt and an N64-branded duffle bag.
